Things to Consider Before Adopting

 Adoption FAQs

  • Our cats our already spayed/neutered and vaccinated along with being microchipped.  I make sure all cats have been tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV. You will, however, need to provide proper medical care with annual check ups and emergency care when needed. You may want to invest in pet insurance or setup a savings account for that. Consider also costs of food, litter, toys and pet sitting if need be.

  • Cats shed fur on clothes and furniture, stock up on lint rollers or hair remover supplies. Cats also like to scratch surfaces and so you will want to keep some scratching posts around and train them to use those. You will want to anticipate some trial and error. We do not agree with declawing as it is inhumane.

  • Everyday not just occasionally.  Contrary to popular belief, cats are very social creatures and need affection and interactive play – especially cats you spend long hours home alone.  Some cats may take a little time to come around, but they eventually do.

  • After you adopt a cat, we recommend that you put them in their own special room for a few days or even a week, with a litter box and food and water. This way they can adapt to their new environment and home. You can spend time with them so they get use to you and everyone in the family. If you have a resident cat or dog, then this gives them time to smell each other under the door and when they meet, they will be more familiar with their scent. A pet’s life span can be from 5 to 20 years. Remember some cats are better than others with children. Please consider your future plans before bringing home a furry companion.

WISE WORDS FOR FUTURE ADOPTERS

  • Even though it may take a little time for a pet to get adjusted and to connect, it is always worth it.

  • You never know what an animal has been through so patience and compassion are key.

  • Don’t expect a perfect pet right out of the gate as each animal has it own quirks, but that connection will grow and you will realize how truly special that bond is.

  • All animals can be a perfect fit if you take the time to adjust and to just give them a chance to shine!!

REMEMBER THE 3/3/3 ADOPTION RULE – FOR ALL ANIMALS

  • 3 DAYS -  to adjust as they may feel overwhelmed or scared, not comfortable to be themselves, shut    down and hide, test the boundaries and may potty outside litter box even if litterbox trained.    Once most cats are introduced to the litter box they will find it and use it.

  • 3 WEEKS – to find their routine, show their true personality and behaviors may start to change.

  • 3 MONTHS – Bond and trust begins to build, gains a sense of security and gets set in their routine and ready to take on the world with their forever human.
